This past Monday, one of our students, Michael Vang set his sights high and made the trip to the Cow Palace in Daly City to audition for the next season of American Idol.
When the phone rang at The Voice Shop, I was as surprised as anyone would be to hear that American Idol was calling, asking us if we had anyone we could send to their Northern California audition for the upcoming season of American Idol. Some of you may remember that our own, Debi Ruud would weekly commentate on KMPH Channel 26 with Kim and Kopi and talk about the night's previous show. For 5 years she gave the local view of singing and talent, and you may ask, was she ever right about who the winner would be? In five years, she accurately picked every winner.
American Idol wanted to know who we could send their way. The requirements: a contestant had to be within the age of 15 and 26 and of course, they could sing. I talked to all of our instructors and we found 3 that fit the bill. We submitted the names, 2 were 15 and 1 was 25. Unfortunately, the cutoff for the 15 years olds was June 31, 2014- if they weren't 15 by that date they were not qualified. That took two of our contestants out of the running, one so close, hitting 15 in just the next month.
Michael was the only one left that could do the job. A student of Debi, the two worked on a handful of songs, preparing songs done Accapella, with tracks and with his guitar. This last Monday, having arrived early for his scheduled audition, Michael hit the stage and performed two songs. Though he did not make the cut, we are extremely proud of Michael and his accomplishment. This is just the beginning for Michael and The Voice Shop Music Academy is there to support him.
